Birth Companions

“You are a birth servant. Do good without show or fuss. If you must take the lead, lead so that the mother is helped,

yet still free and in charge. When the baby is born, they will rightly say: “We did it ourselves!”

From the Tao Te Ching

As a birth companion, whether you are a husband, partner, friend, sister or mother, you have a very special part to play in Hypnobirthing. Contrary to the traditional view of the companion being an onlooker holding the mother’s hand as they do all the work, you have an integral role to play.

Hypnobirthing classes will give you the confidence to be an advocate, a spokesperson, a guide and a calming influence for the birthing mother. You will learn to lead the mother through breathing techniques, help to condition her mind to relax in response to your prompts and protect her birthing environment, wherever that may be.

It is important that, as a birth companion, you accompany the mother to classes so that you can build confidence in each other by establishing which Hypnobirthing techniques work best for you both. Regular practice leading up to the birth will mean that the breathing, relaxation, visualisations and affirmations become second nature. You will be provided with scripts to follow and simple guidance so there is no need to feel anxious about your ability to be the strength and calm that the birthing mother will need.
